>Orange Cucumbers

>For about a month now I’ve been wondering what the hell these were hanging off the cucumber vines in my garden. When I googled orange cucumber I found that there are/were multitudes wondering the same thing. It also seems that most, like me, thought they were planting pickling cucumbers. As it turns out (from the best that I can tell) these are a somewhat new crossbred variety designed to be loaded with vitamins. To read short article about them at the website of the USDA click here. To see a photo of them compared to pickling cucumbers (what I thought I was planting) click here. They are interesting looking…and tasty, too…they have an almost acidic, lemony aftertaste to them…I see many salads and sandwiches in their future…at least until the summer is over. If anyone has heard of these or has grown them please let me know.

Lightening In The City

No, I did not take this photo…I don’ know who did…I’m not even sure what city it is…I typed in the word “lightening” in bing (I binged it?) and this is one of them that showed up.

It has been hot and humid this past week (oppressively so…especially when you work in a kitchen), and I have been hoping for rain.

Well, when I was riding home this evening (sweating) with the Mundo loaded with groceries (see previous post) it began to thunder and lightening. It increased until it is constant. When I arrived home and was unloading the Mundo there was such a bright flash and then loud crash that it made me jump.

I love when it thunders and lightnings (in the distance)…it really does make me realize how little I am in control of anything.

As I type these words it it still pouring rain, and thundering and lightening….I think I’ll shut off the computer, pour another glass of wine and sit on the front porch.

Zucchini On Steroids

Yup…I’m still trying to eat my way through the giant zucchini…look at the size of that thing, it’s as wide as my refrigerator (though I do have an apartment sized refrigerator…still, it’s gotta be 18″ long at least half that in diameter). Anyhow, here’s a pic of the zucchini, pepper, and tomato omelet I had for dinner tonight (heavy on zucchini). The recipe used a mere three slices of it…I still have a few more growing in the garden (ah…the pressure…like I need more stress in my life).

De-Program Yourself

I love this cartoon…check out all the signage…not too far off-the-mark from modern day subliminal (and not-so-subliminal) messaging. More-and-more these days I’m trying to be myself and not what the “world around me” tells me I’m supposed to be…but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t difficult.

Mundo In An Urban Cornfield…and a few thoughts

Sort of a harrowing ride home tonight…and it was only about a mile or so.

First, I’m pulling out of a the driveway of the community center where I swim and there’s a car in the road getting ready to make a left turn into the same driveway. I needed to cross the street (not at a signal) and it’s a busy road where cars fly by way faster than they should, and I know I only have a small window of opportunity before the next batch of cars come from both directions. Our eyes meet, and I pull out. He then begins to turn also, while he’s looking at me. He has to stop because I am now in the middle of the road…he then gives me this look like, WTF.

My point is that if I were in a car I would have had the right-of-way…but apparently not on a bike.

Then, after stopping for a couple slices of pizza, I was coasting down Elmwood near Allen Street…and I’m going at a pretty good clip because of a slight incline. As is often the case when riding in the city I scan the cars to make sure no one is ready to open a door. Anyhow, I see a woman standing between two cars getting ready to cross the street. She looks both ways, and even looks directly at me (I think) and steps out. I slam on the brakes (which luckily I just recently adjusted) and skid to a stop. I stop literally about a foot away from her. Keep in mind that the Mundo weighs 65 lbs with nothing on, add another 160 lbs (me) and that’s a lot of momentum rolling down a hill. She looks at me and simply says: sorry. It really makes me wonder if she saw me or not…I still believe she did.

Things That Can Be Carried On A Bike: two slices of pizza, a gym bag, and the rider…all arriving home safely after a short but crazy ride.
