I don’t understand. In the past I had a problem with spam on this blog so I initiated (at the suggestion of a reader) the use of those swirly letters you have to type in to gain access to comment. This eliminated it mostly, but every once in a while a person (because I’m assumingContinue reading “Huh?”

Things That Can Be Carried On A Bike (#205 & #206) with a few comments.
#205: Five pounds of rising bread dough in a plastic bucket; a canvas bag containing books, pencils, reading glasses, and (oddly) a retractable measuring tape. #206: an empty plastic bucket; a paper bag with a sweaty shirt and 3 pairs of socks; a canvas bag; a cardboard box containing a partial bottle of red wine,Continue reading “Things That Can Be Carried On A Bike (#205 & #206) with a few comments.”
An Original Tall Bike
Though I’ve never ridden one I’ve been intrigued by tall bikes for a while. I’ve also posted on them in the past, specifically about a local bicyclist-bike builder, Jason (click here and here). Anyhow, I came across this photo at CardCow.com today and was immediately impressed. The site does not say what year this isContinue reading “An Original Tall Bike”
Sidewalk Broccoli
This broccoli is growing so near the sidewalk (pavement) that you nearly brush against it as you walk past. It’s the first of the season. I’d better pick it before someone else does…or a dog urinates on it.
Spider’s Web
I saw this spider’s web as I was walking the other day…it’s amazing how much you can take in as you walk, isn’t it? I thought it looked interesting enough to post. But I can’t help to think that it may be a premonition of the future of gas guzzlers…
Stand Alone
I’m thinking about purchasing one of these stands for the Mundo but am not sure if I should wait…it’s brand new and am wondering if it would be smarter to wait for the next version, to work out any kinks.. Currently I have the sidestand, which came standard on the bike. It works surprisingly wellContinue reading “Stand Alone”
Change and Growth
I saw this bumper sticker on a car as I was rode the Mundo yesterday…I was feeling stressed (self-imposed, no doubt) and when I saw this it made me smile. The message did it’s job, I suppose. I’m curious if there is a person who originally said this or if it is just a catchyContinue reading “Change and Growth”
Things That Can Be Carried On A Bike (#204)
A 1/2 gallon of milkA 1/2 gallon of juice.A bag of chips.6 pieces of fruit.A large spinach pizza.
Tiny Ears of City Corn
For the past several years I’ve grown a few stalks of corn in my front yard garden mostly for ornamental purposes…some years the yield is better than others. This year it’s pretty good. The ears are small, but they’re full and the kernels are sweet. I only have a dozen stalks growing next to myContinue reading “Tiny Ears of City Corn”
Bikes Haul
I don’t care how light weight plastic bottles are, this is impressive.
Emmet Fox Quote
“If you want to receive any benefit from your religion you must practice it, and the place to practice it is right here where you are, and the time to do it is now.” Emmet Fox I have so much work to do.
Copenhagen’s Car-Free Streets & Slow-Speed Zones
A model for the rest of us. When I see clips like this it actually makes me want to walk and ride more even though there are so few of us (compared to a city like Copenhagen)…my theory is that the more people see others walking and riding bikes the more it will make themContinue reading “Copenhagen’s Car-Free Streets & Slow-Speed Zones”
S.U.V. and S.U.B.
Yesterday when I came out of my house there was this enormous brand new Hummer sitting in front of it…I was, and still am, in awe of its size. It seemed really out of place on our narrow Allentown street. Why, I couldn’t help but wonder, does someone need–or want–that much power in an urbanContinue reading “S.U.V. and S.U.B.”
Things That Can Be Carried On A Bike (#203)
A rented DVD.2 quarts of milk.A gym bag full of wet clothes. An extra shirt.
Oscar Wilde Quotes
“America is the only country that went from barbarism to decadence without civilization in between.” “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” “Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.” “To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.” “The books that the world calls immoral are booksContinue reading “Oscar Wilde Quotes”
August
Despite the incredible devastation to my tomato plants by an enormous hornworm I’m still able to collect a fair share of tomatoes (click here to see a picture of the scary hornworm in action). This was today’s collection, there’s more to come yet…looks like there’s tomato sauce in my future this summer after all…although probablyContinue reading “August”
Zippy Little Bike
I’ve mentioned in previous posts that I have 5 bikes but really only ride 3 (an old Raleigh and a tandem sit in my basement). My Mundo is my main bike in the summer, the Mule is my main bike in the winter, and the Dahon is my in between bike…meaning I ride it toContinue reading “Zippy Little Bike”
Bike Arch
Photo credit: Tristan Souvier I came across these photo the other day and thought I’d share them (pretty impressive, right?). It’s a sculpture called “Bike Arch” and were an instillation at the Burning Man festival in 2007. The artist is Mark Grieve and he has plenty other photos–of this and other sculptures–at his site. IfContinue reading “Bike Arch”
FDR’s Proposed Second Bill of Rights
I just learned of this proposed Bill while watching the new Micheal Moore documentary, Capitalism: A Love Story. And while this post may not seem like it falls under my traditional criteria of Urban Simplicity, at least not the first two–cooking and biking–it most definitely falls under the third: The Sacred Journey of Everyday Life.Continue reading “FDR’s Proposed Second Bill of Rights”
Bike Becomes Rack
I’ve seen this a few times before and happened to have my camera with me today so I snapped a shot. It’s an old ten-speed that is cemented into someone’s front lawn on Porter Avenue here in Buffalo. The first time I saw this I just assumed it was a sculpture or someone’s personal monumentContinue reading “Bike Becomes Rack”
