This morning’s ride was incredible. It’s only a couple miles to church (where I was heading) and the sky was cloudless. With warm(ish) temperatures and not a breeze in the air, the snow still clung to the trees from the storm. And with the warmer temps today the snow is all but gone on theContinue reading “The View from My Handlebars…”

Things That Can be Carried on a Bike (#449) and a couple pictures of snow.
On the bike…a canvas bag containing two books, a camera, and some papers. A paper bag containing various food leftovers. Western New York got hit with heavy snow today, but not nearly as much as our friends on the eastern seaboard. It wasn’t that cold so the snow was heavy–big heavy flakes–and it stuck toContinue reading “Things That Can be Carried on a Bike (#449) and a couple pictures of snow.”
Evening Ride…
For many reasons–mainly a bad cold, then work, snow and frigid temperatures, and most recently being out of town for a few days–I feel like I haven’t ridden much in the past week or so. But tonight it was…at the sake of sounding hokey…such a lovely winter evening for a ride. Nary a breeze inContinue reading “Evening Ride…”
L’Hiver…
As I rode to a meeting this evening it struck me that it was 6pm and there was still some light left in the sky; during the darkest days of winter the light shrinks away nearly two hours earlier…the days are getting longer! And as I pedaled and coasted into the winter’s cold wind IContinue reading “L’Hiver…”
Six Photos of NYC
I was in NYC over the weekend and snapped a few photos along the way. I was busy for most of the weekend but took photos as I walked to-and-fro. What’s interesting (I think) is that in my continued efforts to travel light (or at least travel lighter) I brought only one camera with meContinue reading “Six Photos of NYC”
Things I Saw While Riding My Bike Today…
One of my favorite things to do is ride around the city at night or during dusk and take photos; if I was an early bird–which I am not–I’m sure I would enjoy the dawn as well. Sometimes I really do question whether I am this guy reincarnated (but I’m getting off topic as IContinue reading “Things I Saw While Riding My Bike Today…”
Nature’s Breath…
So this is pretty cool (yes, pun intended). It’s a time-lapse of cold air moving in then retreating, then moving in again, across the US. It’s as if Mother Nature is exhaling then inhaling. It’s the 40 seconds to watch it. Urban Simplicity.
Winter Riding Tip…
Okay. So if you are an all-weather cyclist you likely already know this. I do have a tendency to state the obvious (or at least the known), and for that I apologize in advance. But I read somewhere years ago, and it’s something that I found out really works, is that if you lower theContinue reading “Winter Riding Tip…”
Things That can be Carried on a Bike (#445), and the view from my handlebars…
On the bike…a gym bag full of wet clothes and a case of red wine (I get thirsty with all the exercise and biking). Despite the warm colors in the photo below, like much of the northeastern United States and eastern Canada we are still in the grip of a cold-snap. It was/is cold today.Continue reading “Things That can be Carried on a Bike (#445), and the view from my handlebars…”
The View from My Really, Really Cold Handlebars…and a few words
It.Was.Cold.Today….really cold. Yup. That’s a screen shot from my computer as I was getting ready for my (thankfully) very short commute to work this morning. 5f = -15c. How cold was it, you may wonder. Well, the only part of my body exposed was the area around my eyes (my pugs recently chewed my goggles,Continue reading “The View from My Really, Really Cold Handlebars…and a few words”

Playing with Light…Two Views from My Handlebars
So first of all I have to say it was cold today…really cold. The high temp was 18F/-8C. Tonight it is supposed to dip into the single digits (F). Nonetheless, I really enjoyed the brisk riding conditions. Mind you, I wouldn’t want it like this all the time (though in the dog days of summerContinue reading “Playing with Light…Two Views from My Handlebars”
Things That Can be Carried on a Bike (#443) and the View from My Handlebars
On the bike…nearly $170 in groceries. The view in front of me…a big, big sky on a cold, cold winter’s day. Urban Simplicity.
Things That Can be Carried on a Bike (#441), the View from My Handlesbars, and a Brief Comment
On the bike…a cardboard box containing seven pints of homemade dog food (minced, leftover meat scraps), and a plastic milk crate containing a canvas book bag with–among other things–three books, and a nylon camera bag containing an extra camera and battery pack and charger. As I type these words it is January 10th and IContinue reading “Things That Can be Carried on a Bike (#441), the View from My Handlesbars, and a Brief Comment”
Things That Can be Carried on a Bike (#440)…and a quick note
On the bike…a cardboard box and plastic soda crate containing a gym bag full of wet clothes and nearly $70 in groceries (is it just me or have groceries become really expensive in the past year?). Just a quick note…I’ll be away from my computer for the next 4 or 5 days so I’ll likelyContinue reading “Things That Can be Carried on a Bike (#440)…and a quick note”
Things That Can be Carried on My Bike (#439), a Brief Comment, and the View From My Handlebars
On the bike…a canvas bag containing two books, and a journal. A plastic dough rising bucket. A camera bag containing an extra camera. two loaves of freshly baked whole wheat bread. So last week we received our “big snow,” the most snow we’ve had in a couple years. And what’s keeping it hanging around forContinue reading “Things That Can be Carried on My Bike (#439), a Brief Comment, and the View From My Handlebars”
Things That Can be Carried on a Bike (#438), the View From My Handlebars, and a Brief Comment
On the bike…a gym bag full of wet clothes, a canvas bag containing–among other things–two books, an extra camera, and four batteries. And also, approximately $20 in groceries and a new neti pot. A brief comment…The below photo is of Bidwell Park here in Buffalo. And today was cold, really cold. It has been colder,Continue reading “Things That Can be Carried on a Bike (#438), the View From My Handlebars, and a Brief Comment”
Things That Can be Carried on a Bike (#437)…and a brief comment
About $30 in groceries, a gym bag full of wet clothes, and two bottles of red wine. It is difficult to tell but the bike is locked to a city-installed bicycle rack which were installed on hundreds of parking meters (and also free-standing) around the city in the past few years. This is awesome…excellent! IContinue reading “Things That Can be Carried on a Bike (#437)…and a brief comment”
Playing with Light (in the cold)
A few weeks ago I finally purchased my first dslr camera. It’s used but still in great shape and takes really good photos (the evidence is in front of you). When I was younger I was really into 35mm cameras (specifically this one). I would take road trips specifically to take photos. Then, as IContinue reading “Playing with Light (in the cold)”
Things That Can Be Carried on a Bike (#435)
A gallon of extra virgin olive oil, a canvas book bag containing two books and a 9″ chef’s knife (click here to read a review of the knife), and a nylon camera bag containing a camera, a lens, and a battery charger. Urban Simplicity.
