I’ve mentioned on numerous occasions on this blog that one of the (many) things I enjoy about using a bicycle for transportation is that you get to see things that you may not if in a car, or if you did see them you may not be inclined to stop. Anyhow, as often is theContinue reading “A Few Things I Saw While Riding My Bike Today”

Put some stuff on it! (or, Pizza: history in every bite)
Pizzas Pictured (from front to back): Za’atar and shanklish; Margherita; boursin cheese with smoked trout and smoked salmon; pesto and portobello mushroom (click the image for a larger view). One of the aspects of food that I have always found interesting—besides cooking and eating it—is its history. And to study food history is in aContinue reading “Put some stuff on it! The View from My Handlebars and Things That Can be Carried on a Bike (#491)
It was such a beautiful day today and felt really good to be on a bike….not too hot, not too cold, sunny, and a slight breeze. Anyhow, here’s a few things I carried in my travels today: Three framed photos wrapped in cardboard and plastic, a camera bag with a camera, a book bag withContinue reading “The View from My Handlebars and Things That Can be Carried on a Bike (#491)”

Crispy Baked Tofu Marinated in Yogurt and Spices
So I have to start off with what has become a sort of mantra for my recipes on this blog…this is really easy to make and super delicious. It is so delicious, in fact, a carnivore or someone who says they do not like tofu would like this (really). It’s probably pretty good for youContinue reading “Crispy Baked Tofu Marinated in Yogurt and Spices”
Things That Can be Carried on a Bike (#489)

Stick This!
I’m not sure why but I felt like sharing (showing off) a couple new fender stickers (pictured above). They, plus the previously existing ones pictured below, are proudly displayed on my Torker; the Yuba remains stickerless. About a year ago I was at a local peace fair and purchased one of the below stickers andContinue reading “Stick This!”
Spiced Potato, Chickpea, and Asparagus Pancakes with Roast Red Pepper Coulis
Okay, so you’re probably looking at these pictures and recipes and thinking a few things. (1) This looks really delicious…they are. (2) They and their sauce look really difficult to make/use a lot of pans, etc. to prepare….these are really simple to make and require only a knife, skillet, bowl, and hand grater to prepare.Continue reading “Spiced Potato, Chickpea, and Asparagus Pancakes with Roast Red Pepper Coulis”
A City Bird, a Country Bird, a Sleeping Pig, and a few Other things I saw While Walking Recently…
These photos were taken over this past week either in the early morning hours while having coffee in Union Square Park or while on walks at Stony Point Retreat Center. Some of them are obvious of their location while others are not. I find nature in the heart of a city especially beautiful. Urban Simplicity.
A Quick Comment…
I just wanted to say that I will be away from my computer for nearly a week…not sure if I’ll be posting for about five or six days. In the interim, if I have WiFi available, I may post a few photos at Urban Simplicity @ Facebook. And thanks, as always, for visiting and stickingContinue reading “A Quick Comment…”
Five Quotes from Henry David Thoreau
Henry David Thoreau July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862 “Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth.” “It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.”“Never look back unless you are planning to go that way.” “What lies behind us and what lies ahead of us are tiny mattersContinue reading “Five Quotes from Henry David Thoreau”

One Last Ride…
If you’ve visited this blog before then you know my interest in bicycles as not just a vehicle from which to get from point A to point B (though for this they are extremely useful) but also as human powered machines that do things. I’ve of course showed all sorts of things that can beContinue reading “One Last Ride…”
Tapenade!
Tapenade. Mmmm. Delicious. I haven’t made this in a while but it once was a staple on multiple restaurant tables where I was chef. And I made this for a dinner I served this evening. It is basically an olive puree seasoned with anchovies, capers, and lots of garlic. It’s of Southern French origin andContinue reading “Tapenade!”
The easiest but also one of the most decadent little cakes you’ll ever make…
Okay. So first a couple things. This cake (or cakes) is likely the easiest you’ll make. It is also super decadent. But the reason I made this is that I became intrigued by a recipe for a 5 minute chocolate mug cake floating around the Internet. I was dubious, and rightly so. I made oneContinue reading “The easiest but also one of the most decadent little cakes you’ll ever make…”
Seven Angels plus One
“Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to sound them.” Revelation 8:6 All of these photos except for one were taken at the beautiful Forest Lawn Cemetery here in Buffalo. The remaining photo (pictured above) was taken in the garden of my place of employment. Hence the title, Seven Angels plus One.Continue reading “Seven Angels plus One”
Shanklish!
Okay, so you’re going to love this. It’s a type of homemade Lebanese cheese that is easy to make and super flavorful. It is different from labneh (which is simply strained yogurt) in that it is cooked. It’s more along the lines of a homemade Italian ricotta or Indian paneer, only instead of being madeContinue reading “Shanklish!”
Here is Today…thoughts on time, a couple quotes, an excellent video, and a link that sort of blows my mind.
“Time is an illusion.~Albert Einstein As I get older–as time marches on–the passing of it (time) really blows me away at times. Now that I’m in my 5th decade on this planet it’s odd at times to think of something that seems recent but may in fact have happened decades ago. I won’t wax philosophicalContinue reading “Here is Today…thoughts on time, a couple quotes, an excellent video, and a link that sort of blows my mind.”
